NMIMS Competency Test Queries Answered by Dr Ramesh Bhat
NMIMS has announced a new ‘Competency Assessment’ test, which has a high 50% weightage in the final admission. What students can expect from this assessment test?
The NMIMS Competency Assessment is stage 2 of the NMIMS MBA admission process 2025. The exam will be of 45 minutes duration comprising three sections to check the managerial ability of the MBA aspirants. The key components of the NMIMS competency test are (a) managerial ability, (b) cognitive ability to test assumptions and problem-solving, and (c) critical thinking and prioritising ideas. The candidates can attempt any sections as per their choice and preference. Furthermore, the candidates will be provided mock tests or sample papers before the PI and competency test to practice. Detailed information on the competency test will be provided soon.
What is the reason for integrating the NMIMS Competency Assessment in the Final Selection Process?
Last year the final selection process included a Written Aptitude Test (WAT) or a Watson-Glaser test followed by PI. It was a general test, but a competency test covers different aspects of management. The test will be more reliable to check the knowledge and skills of future managers.
With the introduction of the new competency assessment, the weightage of the NMAT 2024 Exam has been reduced to only 20%. What is the reason for this?
As previously stated, the competency ability assessment in the second stage determines the candidate’s suitability for management programs, whereas the first stage tests assess the candidate’s general aptitude. While the first stage shortlists candidates based on general aptitude, the second stage assessments focus on evaluating other crucial characteristics that determine the candidate’s fitness for the MBA program.
In other institutes across the globe, the admission process for an MBA comprises two stages where the weightage of stage 2 is more than stage 1. If we consider IIMs the weightage of the Common Admission Test in their final selection process, is as low as 30%.
According to the NMIMS Call Letter, the final section will take five hours. Isn’t this too long…what will be included?
The time for the NMIMS assessment test and PI, the second stage of the admissions process is the same as the previous year.
A single batch of PI comprises 10-12 candidates and takes approximately 30 minutes for one candidate. As you reach the final candidates after finishing the competency assessment of 45 minutes the total time consumed is 5 hours. Therefore, it is written that the total time of the second stage selection process is 5 hours. This will also be convenient for the students who come from outside Mumbai as we have four slots for the second stage.
Morning slot: 8:00 AM & 10:00 AM
Afternoon Slot: 12:00 PM & 2:00 PM
Another big change in the admission process is the reduction of the NMAT cut-off score, as low as 209 for all the batches. What is the reason behind this?
The cut-off for the NMAT exam should be understood in the right manner. NMIMS University offers MBA programs across Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Indore, Navi Mumbai, and the proposed Ahmedabad campus. Till last year, the cut-off for all campuses was different. Since we have changed the assessment the cut-off has to be reduced allowing the aspirants and making it more comprehensive.
The suggested approach allows any candidate to be assigned to a campus of her or his choice based on a rigorous two-stage examination. Furthermore, NMIMS now offers an MBA program with consistent curriculum, delivery, and evaluation standards across all campuses.
Some candidates are also frightened to travel to Mumbai for the final admissions process because they are new to this competency assessment.
As far as visiting the Mumbai campus is concerned, the process remains the same as it was last year and in previous years. Approximately 12,000 individuals visit the Mumbai campus yearly, eventually enrolling in NMIMS programmes to pursue their career ambitions. This year, a similar number of candidates are expected to advance to the second stage.
Please share a message with our aspirants who have scored more in the NMAT exam and feel that their high score will be of no use in the second stage.
Candidates who performed well in the first stage due to their overall ability and preparedness would most likely excel in the second step. Their better scores will surely provide them an edge because of the weighting system applied.
At last Dr Bhat would like to convey a message to shortlisted candidates- do not miss the golden opportunity to complete your MBA with the world-class university NMIMS. Adapt to the new admissions process and become ready to face the challenges of the business world with NMIMS.
